Road Trip Ideas: Jackson Hole to Yellowstone

Yellowstone Road
Jackson Hole offers a paradise for nature lovers, serving as a popular gateway city to two incredible National Parks. Most of our guests spend their time exploring Grand Teton National Park, less than ten minutes from our Fireside Resort cabins. But, for those willing to make a road trip, you can also access Yellowstone National Park during your Wyoming getaway. Jackson Hole is approximately two hours from the South entrance of Yellowstone and just over five hours to the North Entrance. Plan a road trip from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone and see famous attractions like Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake, and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Road Trip from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone

Yellowstone is a massive park with over 2.2 million acres and five entrances. One of the best ways to explore both ends of the park is on the Grand Loop, which connects all the entrances and will take you past the most striking natural features. Since this drive can take anywhere from four to seven hours, we recommend making this a multi-day road trip if you want to experience the best of Yellowstone:

  • Hayden Valley: The first stop on your road trip is Hayden Valley, a popular wildlife viewing location in Yellowstone. Popular species include bison, elk, and grizzly bears.
  • Old Faithful: Watch this famous geyser erupt and learn about the geologic forces behind this geyser at the Visitor Education Center.
  • Midway Geyser Basin: This basin features the famous Grand Prismatic Hot Springs, Yellowstone's largest hot spring known for its vibrant colors.
  • Firehole Canyon Drive: Take a two-mile detour off the Grand Loop to cool down at the Firehole River swimming area and see a 40-foot waterfall.
  • Grand Canyon of Yellowstone: This canyon is carved out by the Yellowstone River and includes two stunning waterfalls.
  • Yellowstone Lake: Visit the largest high-elevation lake in North America.
  • Mammoth Hot Springs: There are over 50 hot springs here with unique terraces that form when the water rises through limestone.

Stay in Gardiner or Cooke City

Once you have reached the North entrance of Yellowstone, we recommend spending the night in Gardiner or Cooke City. Gardiner is just a few miles from the north entrance and offers the ideal base camp after your trip from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone. Stop for a bite to eat at Iron Horse Bar & Grill or stay at The Corral. If you want to stop your road trip at the Northeast Entrance instead, then we recommend staying in charming Cooke City.
